The Client
ElecAS is an Australian electrical design calculator suite built for engineers, designers, estimators and contractors working to AS/NZS standards. It encodes AS/NZS 3000:2018 and AS/NZS 3008.1.1:2025 into interactive tools that handle the calculations an electrical designer would otherwise run through spreadsheets and printed tables.
The audience is technical and unforgiving. These are people who will check the working, so every result has to be traceable back to the clause and formula it came from.
The Brief
Turn a body of standards-based engineering calculation into a set of tools that are fast enough to use on a live job, and rigorous enough that the output can be attached to a design submission.
The platform also had to work where the work happens — on site, on a phone, frequently without a usable connection.
What We Built.
Twenty-plus calculation tools
Cable selection and derating, voltage drop and voltage rise, maximum demand across Tables C1–C3, conduit fill, cable tray sizing, earthing, protection coordination with plotted time–current curves, arc flash incident energy and PPE boundaries, lightning risk assessment, power factor correction, UPS and generator sizing, switchboard and spatial sizing, solar payback, and lighting design worked directly on an uploaded floor plan — each a self-contained tool with its own inputs, validation and result set.
Real cable database
380+ actual Prysmian Australia and Olex catalogue products, so a designer selects the cable they will genuinely order rather than a generic conductor size that has to be translated later.
Standards-referenced PDF reporting
Every calculation exports to a branded PDF that cites the specific clauses and formulas behind the result, which is what makes the output usable as design documentation rather than a scratch calculation.
Offline-capable progressive web app
The suite installs to a device and keeps working without a connection, because site work does not reliably come with reception.
EleCAD single-line diagram builder
A full single-line diagram environment inside the suite: switchboards, sources, generators and loads dropped onto a canvas, with cables and protective devices resolved by the same calculation engines the standalone tools use. Discrimination, standby supply, transfer switching and power factor correction are checked across the finished design, issues are reported against the node that caused them, and the drawing exports to vector PDF or DXF. An existing diagram can also be imported from a PDF and reviewed sheet by sheet rather than redrawn.
A natural-language mode over the same engines
AI Mode lets an engineer describe the problem in plain language — or dictate it — and have the assistant call the calculation tools directly, ask for whatever inputs it is missing, and return the same result card the calculator itself produces. Threads are saved and the conversation exports to PDF. It is deliberately not a chatbot estimating numbers: every figure on screen came out of a tool run.
Tested the way engineering software has to be
3,300+ automated tests and 38,000+ assertions across 130 files cover the 20 calculation engines, with separate QA passes checking output against the worked examples in the AS/NZS 3008.1.1 appendices and against an independent spreadsheet oracle for lightning risk. Continuous integration runs the suite, a Lighthouse audit and a static security scan on every change.
Subscription tiers and self-serve billing
A free tier covering the calculators and reporting, Pro adding cloud project sync, and AI Pro adding the assistant — monthly or annual, with checkout, plan changes, cancellations and reinstatements handled end to end through Stripe and its customer portal, so billing never comes back to the client as admin.
